Possums spark controversy

October 2, 2025

Whether it be possums or other wildlife, power lines pose a constant risk to safety and mortality rates are high.

Utility engineers are all too familiar with this problem, yet the means to protect wildlife from overhead wires and cables are few and the problem itself challenging.

Possums and other critters use the distribution wires like a personal highway, connecting habitats. Powerline infrastructure can also generate heat, which attracts mammals and cold blooded animals like snakes and lizards.

When wildlife creates a connection point between a live conductor and either an adjacent live conductor or earth point, the results can be catastrophic.

Usually the animal will be fatally wounded, and can trigger an outage which can effect thousands. It can also create a shower of sparks potentially initiated bushfires.

Media head lines attest to the frequency of this problem.

The Balmoral Possum Tails help address this challenge, by providing an additional barrier, utility engineers can call upon. It has a higher rating and better performance than competitors in the market due to:

  • Thinner wall construction, meaning lighter weight, less load and greater flexibility
  • High dielectric performance @ 38kv line voltage rating
  • UL V0 performance, being self-extinguishing and non drip
  • Highest UV and weathering performance
  • Greater overlap by design to yield better electrical performance
