Power line safety around construction sites

November 5, 2025

Warning flags and markers are used by power line distribution companies to provide an important safety warning to those operating in proximity to the overhead wires. This is a common occurrence around building and construction sites.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible or practical to de-energise the wires that approximate a building site.

Traditionally Tiger Tails or Flags are utilised on the low voltage mains as a risk mitigation measure. By combining both products on the one site, a more comprehensive solution can be achieved thereby boosting safety and awareness.

Tiger Tails are an industry standard product, known for their quality and reliability. They provide a class leading visual warning with their yellow/black striped pattern, as well as a mechanical barrier from plant and equipment and comply with industry standards.

Warning Flags provide a useful element of movement often seen flapping in the wind to draw the eye.

Typically either one of these two products is installed, but usually only on the low voltage mains.

In support of a wholistic solution, Tiger Tails can be installed on the low voltage mains  while flags could then be deployed on the higher voltage mains (which often sit above the low voltage mains). This provides an even more comprehensive visual indicator for plant and equipment operators around the construction site than either style of product would do on their own.

Crane drivers will often need to move building materials from one location to another within the construction site. Having both the lower wires as well as the upper wires marked effectively, can only assist in visual awareness and reduce the chances of wire strike, costly damage, power outages and potential injury or death.
