WILDLIFE PROTECTION
The Balmoral™ Wildlife Protection products includes unique products, purpose designed to prevent outages and protect wildlife from power lines and equipment. Every year, there is a huge cost in mortalities and injuries of wildlife including endangered species. On top of this, there are the potential for shutdowns and outages which can cause asset damage and loss of power to consumers and businesses. Wildlife routinely climb or perch on overhead Power Lines and can frequently bridge between phases or across a potential voltage difference causing electrocution. Birds including a raft of avian species can also collide directly with hard to see power lines. Each species of bird is different, with some displaying greater vulnerability than others. Factors such as their visual acuity, flight speed and dexterity and other behavioural patterns, can all combine to increase the likelihood of power line strikes. Often these events can either damage the network or trip fault protections on the circuit. Balmoral™ range of products can help prevent this.
The Balmoral BIRDFLAPPA, uses a spring clamp design, with a durable flapper attachment. Simple, yet effective, this device is designed to be durable through a range of environments. The flapper component leverages a glow in the dark effect. Many species of birds become active outside of normal daylight conditions. Bird Diverters which are effective only during daylight hours will not be effective for these species. The glow in dark effect creates a striking contrast in low light conditions, allowing the birds to see the foot print of the power line, well after the sun has gone down.
“Panther Tails™” are a unique range of line guard that has been designed to prevent animals inadvertently contacting between power line phases. Whether this be monkeys, squirrels, possums or birds, there is a real risk of bridging between phases as the animal moves in proximity to the power line. Panther Tails™ have a unique dual layer pattern, black outer, yellow inner as an additional safety feature. That is, they can be visually inspected for wear. Their black exterior provides a subtle visual element blending in with the surrounds.
Bird Blockers assist in the prevention of birds from landing or settling on power lines. Birds can create adverse loading conditions on power lines. Their guano or excrement over time can also damage power line assets. Habitual frequenting of power lines by birds can also create a public nuisance. Bird Blockers are easy to install, light weight and effective in mitigating the impact of birds landing on power lines.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
There are three main categories of products under the wildlife protection space. Bird Diverters, Animal Deterrents and physical barriers. Bird Diverters act as a pure visual warning. They do not scare away birds, rather, they seek to make the bird aware of the structure onto which the Bird Diverter is attached. This allows the bird to make an evasive maneuver mid-flight. Animal deterrents seek to actually repel the bird or animal. This is achieved through any number of means, however, typically via sight or sound. Physical barriers as the name suggest, block the ability for the animal to make direct contract with the energised part.
Extensive laboratory testing plus decades of field based use and experience have refined these products to the highest levels. Trusted for use by utility companies throughout the world, you can depend on the levels of engineering expertise and the ISO standards the manufacturing plant employs to ensure robust quality and longevity in the field.
Wildlife protection products are not necessarily designed to insulate. However, they may be made from plastics that have native insulating properties.
It is key for products designed to go onto power lines to maintain a minimal weight profile. Weight can directly impact the sag and clearances of power lines. It can also affect the loading dynamics sustained by the line. As an example, the Balmoral Bird Blocker, has a weight of around 110 grams each.
